Well, There's One Way to Look at Things

On the bright side, the end of civilization should be good for the Republicans.
So what do I propose for a Republican Party that will be relevant in the future? I’m thinking we need to work towards becoming a loose confederation of warlords. In the post-apocalyptic wasteland, resources will be scarce and the strong will crush the weak — and frankly, those are conditions in which Republicans should thrive. The Republican Party will need to cement its rule through force, destroy the weak, and take their resources. Back to basics for the party, really.

Have you ever read Lucifer's Hammer? It's from the early sci-fi repertoire (1970s), and this post distinctly reminds me of it. I think you would enjoy the read, once you get past the sophomoric writing style typical of the genre. Intriguing stuff.

Of course I've read Lucifer's Hammer. A few times, probably, way back in the day when I was totally hooked on scifi. Scifi's one of the few fiction genres that really lends itself to collaboration, and Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle are titans.

I suspect post-catastrophic lit is a natural draw for right-of-center novelists, because conservative virtues shine much brighter in the chaos of societal breakdown.

Have you read Footfall? I think it's the best of their collaborations. Possibly one of the best pulp alien-invasion stories ever. It's got Niven's trademark tragedy of errors, as cross-species misunderstandings nearly doom humanity, as well as a great celebration of human paranoia, obstinance, and duplicity for the virtues they are ;)

Hm, no, I haven't read Footfall. I haven't delved very deeply into sci-fi, really...my dad is the enthusiast. I just steal his books every once in a while. :-) I'll go check his bookshelf to see if his copy is one of those that has survived all our moves.
