Now, I don't know a ton of plumbers. But I do actually know a couple. The plumbers I'm thinking of run small businesses in which they employ a handful of full-time workers. And while I'm not privy to their bookkeeping, it certainly doesn't seem unreasonable to me that the incomes of those businesses could be in the realm of $250,000.
What so many people making fun of Joe the Plumber fail to understand is that for many, many small businesses, their books, incl. the business, may show over $250,000 a year - but that doesn't mean he's actually taking home that much.
$250k isn't really all that much money when you're paying liability & workers comp insurance, estimated quarterly taxes, county taxes, city taxes, and both halves of your FICA.
